• Early life. Lawrence, as a teenager, was working as a lumberjack in the forests of upper Michigan. He came to California with his older sister, Viola. He worked for Kaiser Brothers Oldsmobile and earned the title of mechanic. While working for Kaiser Brothers, he completed high school requirements in night school. He also worked developing his skills as a freelance writer and photographer. He sold many articles and photographs to mechanic trade publications.
• California Highway Patrol: 1941-1968, California. Lawrence was a career California Highway Patrolman. He joined the patrol 02/01/1941 and, with the exception of Navy service during WW II, continued as a patrolman until his retirement 12/30/1968. He served as a patrolman, accident investigator and attained the rank of sergeant. His ID number was 429.
• US Navy Service WW II: 1942-1945, San Francisco, California. Lawrence served as a shore patrolman (SP) in the 11th Naval District. One of his recurring duties was to ride the troop trains between west coast port-towns to keep order.
