General Notes: excerpt from "THE WILMOT FAMILY OF NEW HAVEN, CONN." by Donald Lines Jacobth of New Haven Conn. pg. 555 of Genealogies of Connecticut Families, Vol. III
"Benjamin Wilmot and his wife Ann settled early in New Haven, Conn. At 'a Court the 2th of Maye 1648, Old Goodman Willmote and Samuel Marsh tooke the oathe of fidellitie.' (Colonial Records, vol. i, p. 111) His son Benjamin was in New Haven at least as early as 1641. On May 1, 1654, 'Old Goodman Willmot desired the Court, that his son may be freed from training which was considered, and with reference to his own age, his wife's weakness, and their living at a farm, his son was freed, only s to attend as other Farmers do.' (Colonial Records vol ii., p. 180) The son referred to was William. The father, Benjamin died Aug. 18, 1669, aged 'about fourscore,' and his wife died Oct. 7, 1668."

The town of Hamden, population 51,960 covers 33.0 sq. miles and is located in southwest Connecticut on the northern border of New Haven. These lands were included in the purchase of 1638 from the Indians by the founders of New Haven. The town was originally settled in 1650 by Benjamin Wilmot, the first brickmaker in the colony. Early development was slow, owing to the delegation of most of these lands as large farms for the New Haven market. Mills were built in 1735, however, leading to the creation of the first parish in the town, the Mount Carmel Society, in 1757. The town was incorporated from New Haven in 1786. Today Hamden is a suburb of New Haven, separated from the larger town to the south by mountains and rock formations. Hamden principal industries are retail trade, computer products, manufacture of wire and cable, concrete, pump mixer products, fabricated metals, construction and business services.

Research Notes: Benjamin “goodman’ Wilmot (Willmott, Willmot, Wilmott),

The name Wilmot is a derivative of Willmon which is an early variation of William the Conqueror's name. It comes from the Norman form of an old French/Germanic name Will/helm meaning Will or desire and helmet or protection. Other English spellings include Wilmoth, Willmett, Willimott, Willmin, Wilmin, Willimont.
The Benjamin Wilmot named here, is often confused with his son Benjamin in the early records. Several sources believe the first three events refer to his son instead. He signed the "Fundamental Agreement" in 1639 in New Haven. Land was laid out to him in 1641. He was among 182 persons who took the Oath of Fidelity on July 1st, 1644. "Old Goodman Wilmot" took the "Freeman's Oath" on May 2, 1647/8. (F-58) When "Old Goodman Willmot" died on Aug. 18, 1669 he was about age "fourscore." (F-22,32) Family lore says that he's related to the Earl of Rochester. (F-449)
There is an Edward Wilmoth on about the same age as this Benjamin who lived in Virginia at the time of his death in 1647. It is not known if these two men are related, but his will is included here, in case a connection is found at a later date. Virginia Will Records, from Va Mag of Hist. & Bio., Wm. & Mary College Qtly., & Tyler's Qtly, Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, 1993. "Isle of Wight p. 229 The Will of Edward Wilmoth (unimportant clauses omitted. sic) "I, Edward Wilmoth, being at this time very weak in Body but perfect of memory. "Imprimis. I do by these presents make my beloved wife Annis Wilmoth, my full & whole executrix of all my goods and chattels in Virginia or elsewhere, particularly I give unto my wife af'd four milch cows, a steer, and a heifer that is on Lawns Creek side, and a young yearling Bull. Also I give unto my daughter Frances a yerling heifer. Also I give unto my son John Wilmoth a cow calf, and to my son Robert Wilmoth a cow calf. Also if any of these children dye before they come to age it is my will the said cattle shall come to the survivour. Also the plantation that we are upon I give unto my wife and all my household stuff & moveables. Also I intreat John Jackson & George Coboraft to be my overseers for the performance of my last will and testament, being a true act and deed of mine own. Witness my hand this 15th day of February, 1647.

10. Alexander Wilmot was born on 13 Dec 1672 in New Haven Connecticut.

Research Notes: Mary Norris Wilmot Landon - b.. ca. 1675; d. after 1729. She was probably born in Southold, Long Island. She was married sometime before Sep of 1698 to Alexander Wilmot (b. 13 Dec 1672; d. 1721), a resident of Southold, Long Island, who was probably born in New Haven, CT. Alexander was the son of William and Sarah Thomas Wilmot, and the grandson of Benjamin Wilmot (b. ca. 1590; d. 18 Aug 1669) and Ann Ladd (d. 7 Oct 1668). Alexander had been previously married to Sarah Brown, daughter of Eleazar and Sarah Bulkeley Brown, and had a daughter, Sarah. The census listing of the town of Southampton includes Mary Norris Wilmot and Alexander Wilmot living together in 1698, but they had no children at that time. It is possible that the daughter, Sarah, from Alexander's first marriage, was living elsewhere; she was only three years old.
The home lot of Alexander and Mary Wilmot was at Bridgehampton on the road to Sagg.
The will of John Wick of Southampton was written on 15 Dec 1718. In it he names as his executor "Alexander Wilmot, joyner."
Alexander left a will dated 18 Sep 1720 and proved on 30 Mar 1721. In it he names his wife, Mary, his daughters: Sarah Bradley, Hannah, Mary, and Hebzibah; and his son, Walter (under age). From the will of Robert Norris, Mary's father, the daughters, Hannah, Mary, and Hebzibah, are also named. The will of Alexander Wilmot appointed as one of the executors of his will Benjamin Howell, who was the husband of Hannah Norris, Mary's younger sister.
After Alexander died in 1721 Mary was married a second time to James Landon (d. after 1738), the son of James (d. 1738) and Mary Landon of Southold, Long Island. Upon the death of his father, James Jr. received a house and some land in Litchfield, CT, plus an equal share of the rest of the estate, to be shared with his six brothers and four sisters. The father's will was proved on 26 Mar 1738. Apparently James and Mary were still living in Southampton at that time, but probably moved into Litchfield after that.

82. Margret Salina Wilmot was born on 4 Aug 1881 in Pueblo, Colorado, died on 16 Oct 1964 in Doellstedts Nursing Home, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, California, at age 83, and was buried on 20 Oct 1964 in Santa Margarita Cemetery. The cause of her death was chronic pyelonephtitis, severe. Another name for Margret was Marguerite Salina Wilmot.

General Notes: Marguerite (Margaret) Salina Wilmot was born on August 4, 1881 in Pueblo, Colorado. She was the second oldest of her siblings. She was 5' 2', medium build, black hair and dark brown eyes. She was a lovely woman in her youth. She was removed from school at an early age to work on her parents farm. While living in Camden, Missouri, four months short of fifteen years of age, she married William Henry Fry. The marriage took place on March 3, 1896, in Nevada, Missouri.
Margaret did not particularly want to marry Wil Fry but Chauncy Wilmot was a controlling father. He owed Will Fry wages and Will Fry wanted Margaret so the marriage took place and the debt was settled. Chauncy Wilmots children never oppsed their father.
During the course of this marriage, hey farmed in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico, eventually coming to San Luis Obispo, California in 1904.
Will Fry had left Margaret several times to be an evangelist, always returning. But in 1911, he left again and did not come homne as was his habit nor did anyone hear from him again. Word came, later, that he had died in the Los Angeles area.
Margaret was left alone with her aged father in law and six children to provide for. Sometimes the wealthy Smiths in New York gave her financial assistance.
Her father had given her the use of an acre of his land and she managed to put a small house on it tolive in. She kept a cow, raised chickens, a pig and had a garden. She canned and preserved much for her table.. She walked grom henderson Avenue to various homes in San Luis Obispo to do washing and ironing for a few doctors and lawyers she was acquainted with. She was paid fifty cents foreach tub of l;aundry or batch of ironing.. She then walked home afterward. It was about a two-mile walk each way.
After Ethel's marriage, she had no one to care for her children while she worked. Out of necessity for a home, she married an admirer, Valentine Soto. The marriage took place in 1915. A daughter was born on December 24, 1916 in San Luis Obispo, and was named Cora Margaret Soto (sometimes known as Frances Christina).
Of her three husbands, she loved only Fate. They were together about fiften years and in spite of his problems, she was happiest with him.
Around 1936 she lived in La Verne, California for about one year to assist her sister Ethel in starting a second bakery. In 1937 she returned to ranching. In 1939 she sold out and bought a small fifteen acre farm in Templeton. It was part of what is now Twin Cities Hospital. In 1941 she sold her farm and moved to Chico, California and bought a house and cared for children and borders. Around 1948 through 1951she lived in Santa Margarita caring for a member of the Sumner family, and then on the Carrisa Plains caring for a second member of her former husband's family.
Somtime in the 1950's she sold her Chico home and bought a house in Richvale and then moved to dixon to work as a cook and housekeeper for her son John's employer. She retired in 1957 at the age of 76. She returned to Santa Margarita, driving her own car with all she owned, and bought a small house at the upper end of Encina Street. She shared her home with her daughter Ethel. She joined the Santa Margarita Community Church and became president f the Ladies Sewing Society.
She fell and broke her hip in 1961 but she was determined to walk again. She progressed from a cast to a walker, to crutches, then a cane. She did walk again at the age of eighty. After Ethel's death in 1962, she returned to Dixon to live with her son John. Her health took a decline and she returned to Santa Margarita t a nursing home. Unknown injuries from her fall in 1961 had damaged her internally and had gradually destroyed her health. She died October 16, 1964 at the age of eighy-three. She was buried in the Santa Margarita Cemetery. The Communion Service for the Santa Margarita Community Church was purchased and dedicated in her memory.
So much could be written about maragret and the trials and struggles of eighty-three years but the whole could never be told.
Margaret never knew anything but hard work and self denial beginning in her childhood and continuing on throughout her life time.
Since she was the second oldest of Chauncey's children, she had much work and responsibility to account for. Her father taught her well. She seemed to know everything about farming, crops and animal science. She was familiar with pioneer survival skills. She knew how to use and preserve everything the land had to offer. Her mind was an encyclopedia of wisdom and knowledge.
She knew what was like to live through Kansas cyclones. She remembered dust storms so strong that wet burlap over doors and windows gave little protection. She remembered the fear of riding bareback after dark over the Kansas praries knowing that wild wolves could be near and she was just a small child. In later years, she could ride and shoot as well as most men and she was known to shoot at prowlers who made a habit of raidiing her storehouse.
Somewhere in her busy years she had learned domestic crafts but she had little time to enjoythem. She liked music and usually had a piano or organ in her home and though she did not play an instrument, her daughters had music lessons. She many of the old ballads of her era and she could quickly compose a bit of verse or song forwhatever incident that appealed to her sense of humor. Sheloved the old hyms offaith and sang them while she worked no matter what her circumstances were.
She seemed to have an unlimited repertoire or proverbs and Ben Franklin quotations. Her vocabulary was sprinkled with such words as victuals, yonder, reckon and other expressions used in her upbringing. She did not approve of cards, tobacco or alcohol nor did she ever indulge in those habits.
She always curled her hair and wore a hat and gloves for church which she attended as regularly as possible. She did not stumble over doctrinal differences and she could not pray without weeping.
No matter what sorrows or trials came into her life, her faith never faltered or weakened. She accepted all from the hand of god in humility and love without question or reproach. If it was possible to improve her lot in life she tried but circumstances prevented her efforts. She accepted it and soldiered on.
She raised one grandson and usually had one or more persons orchildren under her roof at all times during her life time. She served on the school bard in early years and was active in church activiteis always.
She had brough babies into the world and had lost some of her own. She sat beside the dying and after death washed, dressed and prepared them for burial, and sat beside them all night, sometimes alne, as was the custom of her era. She cared for her aged father-in-law after Will Fry left her and would not give him up, not for several years. Eventually Ethel, with the help of Valentine Soto, removed her grandfather from Margaret's home and placed him in the geriactric ward of the general hospital. This took place while Margaret was at work. When she returned home and discovered him gone, it grieved her deeply but she respected Ethel's wishesin the matter. She could never understand how she could bring herself to place him away for so great a love Samuel had for her. Ethel's reasoning was, "It was best for Margaret."
After her father turned his property over to his sons and she received nothing for her share, she cared for her parents in her home until their deaths. She mortgaged her team and wagon to pay for her father's funeral. She never expressed anger or regret. She believed in love and forgivenessand nothing ever changed her feelings for her family.
This is not to say that Margaret had no faults. She was human and erred many times. She was usually gentle and passive and could be indecisive. In other ways she was her father's daughter . She could display a fierce temper and believed her word was law in her home and expected obedience in return and stated so. But she was usually pleasant, kind, loving and generous. She was called Margaret, or Maggie and sometines Mag. The faults that she had were obscured by her virtues.
Her headstone is inscribed with these words, "Little she asked - Much she gave." Truer words were never penned or carved in stone.
"Who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies. She stretched out her hands to the poor and she reached forth to the needy. Her children rose up and called her blessed. she opened her mouth with wisdom and her heart with kindness. Strength and honor are her clothing and she shall rejoice in time to come." Proverbs 31.

The family did not approve of this marriage and it ended around 1929. Charlotte returned to her parent's home in Seattle, Washington. Bert remained single and was his mothers main support and help on their ranch. He seemed to always love Charlotte but he never mentioned her name or allowed others to speak of her in his presence. He never saw her or his son again.

Bert was serious, quiet, dependable, strong minded and stubborn. He was direct and showed no fear. He had some temper but was very self disciplined in all matters. He was never known to raise his voice for any reason. He liked to read, enjoyed movies, swimming and often played games with his nieces and nephews. He did not have much opportunity to develop personal Interests.
He was called Bert or Buddy by his family. The family had always worked hard to make a living and money was not Plentiful. When Bert began his life in the city and had extra money he was determined that each member of his family would have a Christmas gift. In 1937 he began buying gifts for everyone. He died on the 15th of December 1937, before he completed his goal, but the gifts were distributed after his death in time for Christmas.
